Mr. Coffee ECM160 Review
The ECM160 is one of the most compact espresso machines we’ve ever seen, and it weighs about 5.5 pounds. Unlike other espresso machines, this one won’t eat up all of your counter space.
That said, this machine’s compact design does mean that you’ll be trading in bar pump pressure for steam pressure. The end result is similar to what you’d brew in a moka pot. In our opinion, espresso is just as delicious this way, but connoisseurs may prefer the taste of espresso brewed in a bar pump machine.
With the ECM160, you can brew up to four shots at a time. Mr. Coffee includes a convenient glass carafe that’s easy to pour and won’t make a mess. The glass carafe is great for mixing coffeehouse style drinks, like lattes and cappuccinos.
There’s a frothing arm on the side, too, so you can easily steam and froth your milk. We just wish that Mr. Coffee had included a frothing pitcher. For under $50, we can’t complain about this too much.
Along with the machine, Mr. Coffee includes a recipe guide and a measuring scoop. The recipes were a nice addition, but the measuring scoop left a lot to be desired. We recommend buying a good quality tamper for tamping.
We were surprised by how great the espresso tasted from the ECM160. We didn’t set the bar too high for this machine because of its price, but it far exceeded our expectations. The crema was rich, the frothing arm worked perfectly for steaming milk, and clean-up was a breeze. Tamping was difficult with the included scoop, but we just used our own tamper. Set-up was a piece of cake, and we were brewing our first shot within minutes of opening the box.
- Compact design
- Easy to use
- Frothing arm included
- Affordably priced
- Glass carafe included for brewing multiple shots
- Quiet operation
- Measuring scoop is not the best
- No frothing pitcher
As mentioned previously, our only two issues with this machine is that the measuring scoop isn’t the best, and there’s no frothing pitcher included. At this price range, you can’t expect much in the way of accessories, and the machine itself does an excellent job at brewing espresso.
The Mr. Coffee ECM160 is a great little espresso maker that won’t break the bank. It’s easy to use, brews up a delicious shot of espresso, and with the frothing arm, allows you to brew coffeehouse drinks right in your kitchen. The ECM160 is a great choice for anyone looking for a budget-friendly, simple machine that won’t take up much space.
