Delonghi EC702 Review

The EC702 looks like a machine you’d find a coffeehouse. Its stainless steel construction is not only sleek and easy to clean, but adds durability to the machine.

With 15 bar pump pressure, this machine does produce an authentic shot of espresso and a wonderfully thick crema. The boiler is stainless steel for quick and even heating.

On the side of the machine is a convenient frother. Most machines have a steaming wand or nozzle on the front of the machine, which isn’t always convenient and can sometimes get in the way. We loved that the frother was off to the side, so we could brew our shot without having to worry about the pitcher getting in the way. The frother produces a nice foam, too, so you can whip up cappuccinos with ease.

The EC702 has two separate thermostats built in, which separately control the steaming and espresso-brewing functions. This means that you can brew a shot and steam at the same time, or brew back to back without worrying about over-extraction. This feature can be especially convenient when entertaining guests.

One of the features that we really loved was the dual function filter holder. With this machine, you’re not forced to choose between ground coffee or coffee pods. The EC702 lets you enjoy the best of both worlds. With the ability to use E.S.E. pods, you can enjoy faster brewing times.

The self-priming operation is another great feature of this espresso machine. There’s no time-consuming start-up preparation. This machine is ready to brew in no time.

With an included cup warming tray, you’ll feel like you’re in your own personal coffeehouse. The heater keeps your coffee cups warm, so you enjoy consistently smooth and delicious espresso drinks.

Pros

  • 15 bar pump pressure for a truly authentic flavor and rich crema.
  • Easy operation.
  • Clean-up is a breeze.
  • Frother produces nice foam and is conveniently positioned on the side of the machine.
  • Self-priming operation.
  • Heated cup tray keeps your mugs warm.

Cons

  • The first few shots taste horrible.

The EC702 is just like any other bar pump espresso machine – you need to break it in before you can enjoy a delicious shot of espresso. The first few shots tasted horrible, and that’s because it takes few rounds of brewing to get rid of the initial metallic taste. We recommend brewing three or four shots with lesser-quality coffee to break in the machine. These first few brews will allow the coffee flavor to permeate the filter.

Aside from this minor gripe, the DeLonghi EC702 performed perfectly. It brews delicious espresso, and the added frother makes it easy to whip up cappuccinos. In this price range, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better machine.
