Cuisinart EM-200 Review

Cuisinart is known for producing quality home appliances at affordable prices. We knew that the EM 200 was going to be easy to use and produce a great shot of espresso. But we were especially happy to learn that it brews either single or double shot, and that it’s compatible with ground coffee or pods. While this machine isn’t on par with high end espresso makers, like the Rancilio Silvia, it’s a great option for home users who want to quench their espresso cravings.

Cuisinart EM-200 Review

Right out of the box, the EM 200 was so easy to use. With a modern, sleek stainless steel housing, this machine looked great on our countertop. All of the machine’s controls are situated on the front top panel, so they’re easy to access and find. You have the option of brewing a single or double shot, and using either the manual option or the preprogrammed cup size. There is also a button to control the steam function, so you can make a cappuccino or a latte.

One of the things that we loved about the EM 200 was that it’s compatible with both ground espresso and coffee pods. We’re fans of coffee pods, so we were excited about this feature.

Although Cuisinart says that the EM 200 is a programmable machine, it does not offer the ability to program brews – as in set your machine to start making coffee at 6 AM. The programmability function only applies to cup sizes. There are a number of pre-programmed cup sizes, but you can override these settings to create the perfect size brew for you. We personally didn’t meddle with the cup sizes, but we can see this being a useful feature.

The 64 ounce water reservoir is easily removable and refillable, with such a large size, you won’t be refilling often.

A cup warming tray is on top of the machine, which ensures that your cups are the perfect temperature for espresso brewing. We love this feature because it’s not one that you normally find on mid-range espresso machines, and a warm cup is essential to creating the perfect shot of espresso.

On the side of the machine is a steam wand, which allows you to steam milk for cappuccinos and lattes. Cuisinart even goes as far as providing you with a frothing cup, so you don’t have to buy one separately. They’ve also included a tamping tool, so you can start brewing right away.

Pros

  • Brews single or double shots
  • 15 bars of pressure for authentic espresso
  • Can use grounds or pods
  • Large water reservoir that’s easy to refill
  • Programmable cup sizes
  • Steam wand to create cappuccino and lattes
  • Convenient cup warmer included

Cons

  • No steam wand control

The only issue we had with the Cuisinart EM 200 was the fact that there was no steam wand control. Because you can’t control the pressure of the steam, you sometimes wind up making big bubbles if you’re not careful.

Overall, the Cuisinart EM 200 is a reliable, durable espresso maker that’s affordable, easy-to-use and brews a great shot of espresso. This is a great machine for anyone who is just getting started with espresso brewing.
