Breville 800ESXL Review
Priced under $350, the 800 ESXL isn’t exactly a high-end espresso machine, but it does produce a smooth cup of espresso. With a 15 bar Italian pump, this machine produces more than enough pressure to deliver a great shot.
The stainless steel housing is sleek, but it also makes the machine easy to clean and offers added durability. All of the controls are easy to find and use, so making your first shot of espresso won’t be a chore.
The selector dial gives you the option of choosing between espresso, hot water and steam, which makes this machine very versatile. Use it to brew a cup of tea or a shot of espresso. When you’re done, use the steam function to froth milk for cappuccinos or lattes. The convenient purge function adjusts the water temperature after you use the steam function, so you don’t over-extract your next shot of espresso.
Speaking of steam, a swivel steam wand is built-in with a frother. Breville even includes a frothing pitcher, so there’s no need to buy one separately.
With a 4.5” cup clearance, you’re not forced to use tiny espresso shot glasses. There’s plenty of space for your usual coffee mug, so you can brew up coffeehouse-style drinks right in your kitchen.
Compared to other machines we’ve tried, the 800ESXL is relatively quiet. It’s not silent, but you won’t be waking the neighbors when you make your morning cappuccino.
- Brews a great shot of espresso in two minutes or less.
- Frother and steam wand included.
- Versatile – can choose between hot water, steam and espresso.
- Easy to use.
- Clean-up is a breeze.
- Durable stainless steel housing.
- Large water tank that’s easy to refill.
- Doesn’t produce a dry puck
We did notice that with the 800ESXL, you won’t get a dry puck – but that’s okay. Breville explains in the user manual that the technology they use to heat the coffee and produce a rich crema will not leave you with a dry puck. This isn’t a deal-breaker by any means, and this espresso machine really does produce a great shot of espresso.
If you’re looking for a mid-range espresso machine, the 800ESXL really is a great choice. Not only can it produce a great shot of espresso, but the frother and steam wand also allow you to create coffeehouse drinks, like cappuccinos and lattes. The hot water function even lets you brew a nice hot cup of tea. The 800ESXL is the perfect choice for anyone just getting started with espresso brewing.
